Even when we just want
to picture trees there are bound to be some sheep in view. Above, some
lambs enjoy the lush grass around a ten year spinney. The horse chestnut
in the foreground survived some sheep nibbling early in life and now looks
good at 15 years.
We think it was Confucius who said 'the
best time to plant a tree was ten years ago and the next best time is
today' whoever said it was, we think, absolutely right. In the last
ten years we have planted more than ten thousand trees around the farm
and are still planting. This year has been a great year for growth and
our major plantations, planted nine years ago are really starting to
grow away. Even trees planted last autumn are showing a healthy flush
of new green leaves.
Another look at the Horse Chestnut. It
took a few years for it to grow above the sheep but since then has grown
well. Planted by a dear friend some fifteen years ago it serves as a lovely
memorial since his passing.
They tell us the Great Oak is at least 200
years old. It certainly provides pleasure to all although Wag, in the foreground,
seems interested in other things. It looks good for at least another 200 years.
