A look around Cirencester
The Church of St John the Baptist originally founded in 1117 dominates the towns market place and is one of the largest 'Parish' churches in the country. It is one of the great 'wool' churches built from the prosperous wool trade.in the 15th and 16th centuries.

In Roman times it was 'Corinium', the second largest city after London. Today with a population of under 20,000 Cirencester is content to be known as the Capital of the Cotswolds. Its present name derives from the Celtic word Corin thought to have been adopted by the Romans from the name of a British tribe, the Cornovii. To this, after the battle of Dyrham in 577, the Saxons added Ceaster which is derived from the Latin and means Roman camp or town. Hence Cirenceaster and then Cirencester.
